id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> Enlarge ImageWe’ll miss this little Swede.

Manuel Carrillo III/Roadshow While you can learn a lot in a week or two of driving a car daily, you learn so much more after a full year. That’s why we love taking what you might call a decidedly extended test drive of some of the more popular cars in the market, and given how many of you were clicking on everything we wrote about Volvo’s smallest and most attainable car, adding an XC40 to our long-term fleet was an easy decision.

Choosing how to spec it, however, required a little more discussion. Ultimately, for the car we called “The Swede,” we opted for the T5 spec, with a 248-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive. We added the $1,400 premium package to get us Volvo’s Pilot Assist adaptive safety suite plus other niceties like wireless charging. Ticking other boxes like heated front seats and metallic paint gave us a cost of $42,590 delivered.

The car started its time with us in California, where Managing Editor Steven Ewing got first dibs, concluding that our Volvo XC40 is “a really nice little car.” News Editor Kyle Hyatt was similarly enamored after taking our XC40 on an extended road trip, though former reviews editor Manual Carrillo III wasn’t quite so keen on the XC40, struggling to get comfortable.

Following a stint up in our San Francisco office, the Swede went on a little journey. We tied it up with a bow (not really) and packed it off for Detroit, where I took delivery and drove it back to New York, diving in the deep end with a 10-hour, 600-mile run along the wild expanses of I-90. Not the most exciting of introductions, but a great opportunity to test out Pilot Assist. The advanced lane-keep and adaptive-cruise systems, though well short of proper autonomy, do a great job of simplifying the more menial parts of highway driving. And, while the little XC40 is a bit on the stiff side to properly absorb some of I-90’s more tired sections of concrete, the ride quality of our little ‘ute proved to be admirably good.

Boats on the roof, dogs in the hatch, bike on the back, 솔레어카지노주소 ready for adventure.

Tim Stevens/Roadshow Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system, though a bit old and sluggish at this point, still holds up well enough, providing easy access to vital functions like activating the rearview camera. The navigation functionality is on the basic side, but Android Auto support meant I was far more likely to rely on Google Maps anyway.

With grand plans of adventure on my mind, I fired a note off to Thule, which was kind enough to hook The Swede up with a roof-mounted rack system capable of hauling my pair of sea kayaks. Volvo also threw on a trailer hitch and, so augmented, the XC40 was a more than capable hauler for myself, my wife, our dogs, our boats and my bike, even scoring 23 miles per gallon so encumbered.

I wanted to use that hitch for some trailering adventures as summer turned to fall, hoping to put the XC40’s rated 3,500-pound towing capacity to the test — admirably high for such a little guy. Alas, an unintended series of camper scheduling changes nixed that plan. Always leave ’em wanting, I suppose.

As the seasons turned and the snow fell, 크레이지슬롯주소 the XC40 proved more than capable in the limited wintery conditions we’ve had thus far in the northeast. Importantly, the remote starting functionality provided by the Volvo On Call app meant the The Swede was always warm and 솔레어카지노 welcoming, even when I’d left it on the other side of a big parking garage.

Your provider might be throttling your internet. Here’s how to check

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> Tyler Lizenby/CNET There’s little more infuriating than a Netflix show stuttering and stopping right at the climax thanks to bad Wi-Fi. The collective groans, the held breath as loading stalls at 99%, the children crying for Moana to come back: all of these could be avoided if the internet just stayed steady. But alas, steady internet is rarely our reality, and in many areas, internet service provider options are too limited to solve the problem.

What’s worse, with last year’s Supreme Court decision to decline to hear an appeal on net neutrality, ISPs can still throttle your internet, limiting your broadband if you’re streaming more YouTube or Hulu than they want, and providing slower connections to websites owned by their competitors. Luckily, there’s a solution to some of these problems: the virtual private network. Basically, ISPs need to see your IP address to slow down your internet, and a good VPN will shield that identity. Here’s how to find one and use it to check whether your ISP is artificially slowing down your internet.

Step 1

Test your internet health

Screenshot by David Priest/CNET You can measure the health of your internet in a number of ways, but I would suggest starting out with a simple test through M-Lab. This will check your connection speed, essentially gauging whether your ISP is providing consistent performance no matter the content you’re accessing. This measurement isn’t perfect, but it’s a good starting place.

Step 2

Find a reliable VPN

Norton If you’ve done a basic first test on your internet health, and you still think something may be awry with your ISP, start researching VPNs. There are dozens of reasons to get one, and just as many factors to take into account while searching for the best virtual private network, such as security, 우리카지노 price and server locations. Luckily, we’ve done that work for you already. Check out our suggestions here: CNET’s picks for best VPNs.

Step 3

Compare your speed with the VPN.

Screenshot by David Priest/CNET Next, test your internet speed somewhere like Fast.com or Speedtest.net. Compare the results to the same test when your VPN is active. The use of any VPN should cut your speed considerably, so the speed tests should show a discrepancy, with the VPN-active speed notably slower than the VPN-inactive speed. But a VPN also hides the IP address that providers use to identify you, so if your speed test with the VPN is faster than without the VPN, that may mean your ISP is targeting your IP address for throttling.

Step 4

Fix your internet

Screenshot by David Priest/CNET OK, this is the hard part. Even if you find out your provider is throttling your internet, there may not be much you can actually do. Many people in the US live in regions with ISP monopolies or duopolies, 파워볼분석 so you might not be able to find a better provider. But here are a few useful responses:

If you do have options, use the best provider in your area. Measurement Lab provides a good resource for finding info specific to your region, and that can guide you to a more reliable ISP.

Use your VPN to maintain more consistent speeds. A VPN can’t solve a bad connection or other reasons behind your slow service, but it can mitigate throttling from unscrupulous ISPs.

Call your provider and threaten to switch providers if they don’t stop throttling your internet. This might seem old fashioned, and I can’t guarantee lasting results, but providers have responded positively to such tactics when I’ve used them.

Use all of Apple Maps’ new features that we can’t live without

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> Apple Maps’ new Look Around feature is well done, no doubt.

Jason Cipriani/CNET Last month, Apple announced it had finished rolling out the Apple Maps redesign it announced alongside iOS 13. The new look and features are years in the making, and they finally give iPhone and iPad users a worthy Google Maps replacement.

The new features include sharing your ETA with a contact to keep them updated on your location and time of arrival. There’s also a new Apple-made feature called Look Around that’s akin to Google’s Street View.

Apple Maps isn’t the only major change in iOS 13. There are plenty of new features, including a new swipe keyboard that doesn’t let you swear, that make the upgrade appealing.

Share ETA is a convenient way to let your friends know when you’ll arrive.

Jason Cipriani/CNET Share your ETA

This has to be one of the more useful features that Apple has added in recent memory. As of iOS 13.1, you can share your estimated time of arrival with a friend through Apple Maps, iMessage or text when you’re using Apple Maps navigation. Here’s how:

1. Start Apple Maps navigation and get turn-by-turn directions to a location.

2. When viewing current directions, swipe up on the bottom of the area that displays your arrival time and shows the end button.

3. Tap the Share ETA button.

4. Select the contact or contacts with whom you want to share it.

Now playing: Watch this: How to use the new Apple Maps 1:31 After tapping on the Share ETA button, you may notice that some contacts have an Apple Maps icon next to their name, instead of a Messages icon. Those are people also using an iPhone.

If your iPhone is running iOS 13.1 or newer, and 카지노사이트 you’re sharing your ETA with someone with an iPhone on iOS 13.1 or newer, then Apple Maps will be used to share your location, route, and ETA. However, if you share your ETA with a non-iPhone user, or someone running iOS 13 or older on their Apple device, then a message will be sent.

Now playing: Watch this: iOS 13: Cool features you’ll want to try now 1:32 When Apple Maps sends a text or iMessage, 카지노사이트 it will read something similar to this:

I started sharing my ETA with you in Apple Maps: arriving at Pepsi Center around 10:44 AM. I’ll let you know if I’m running late.

If you hit traffic or take a detour, Apple Maps will send another message letting the person know you’re running behind and the new estimated time of arrival.

From my testing, the threshold for triggering another alert was if I would be 5 minutes late. So, in the instance above, if my new arrival time was 10:49 a.m., Apple Maps would send another message.

The added details in the new Apple Maps make a world of difference.

Apple, Inc. There’s now a more detailed map

Apple has also spent a lot of time scanning streets and roads across the country to produce a more detailed, better-looking map. The new-look started as a slow roll out in the US following the launch of iOS 13 in September. At the end of January, Apple announced the rollout was complete.

If you haven’t seen the more detailed map yet, open the Maps app and look at your area. You don’t have to update your app, it’s all done automatically on Apple’s servers.

Another notable change in Apple Maps is a new feature called Look Around. It’s similar to Google’s Street View, using photos to show you exactly what a location looks like and allowing you to move around the city streets. The only downside is that it’s only available in New York, 우리카지노 San Francisco, Las Vegas, Oahu, Houston and Los Angeles right now. Apple has quickly added more cities to the list (Look Around initially launched with support for only San Francisco) and will continue to add more cities in the future.

Look Around is pretty cool, if live in a city that actually has it.

Screenshots by Jason Cipriani/CNET How do I use Look Around?

If you don’t live in one of the supported cities, that’s all right — you can still check out Look Around. Here’s how:

1. Open Apple Maps and zoom in on a city that has Look Around. I picked San Francisco when testing because it’s one of my favorite cities to visit.

2. Zoom in to a specific area, or until you see a pair of binoculars show up in the top-right corner of the map; just below the location icon and the “i” button.

3. Select the binoculars to open Look Around.

A window will pop up, with a familiar Street View-like look. Expand Look Around to full-screen mode by tapping on the double-arrow icon.

You can swipe around in that window to change the direction of the photo, or tap on the street to move down the block (just like tapping on arrows in Street View). As you move around, you can tap on the name of a business to zoom in on the storefront and view its address, hours, phone number and website — the same stuff you see when searching for a business in Maps.

These features join the already impressive list of additions Apple made to iOS 13. From a new Reminders app, to a new method for deleting apps on your iPhone and iPad ( $363 at Walmart ) — there’s a lot to learn.

The Low Down on Buying a Car With Low Down Payment

WP Symposium Pro - Extensions Plugin
This demonstration has expired, please purchase a licence or uninstall the WP Symposium Pro Extensions plugin - get a valid licence code here.

When you select a car at the dealership lot, you will face the inevitable question of the down payment. Putting money down and buying a car is an age-old tradition. It gives the lender a chance to witness your financial condition and allows you to lower the loan burden. In an ideal scenario, it is best to make as much down payment as possible. But, we do not live an ideal world. So, what should you do when you do not have enough money for your dream car?

Can you buy a Car with Low Down Payment?

Buying a car feels like being on a trial. The lender considers your credit score, payment history, monthly income and several others aspects of your life before approving the loan. And, when you can only afford low down payment, it can cause trouble. But, do not think that having no access to cash means putting an end to your car dream. There’s one thing that can change the game. Have you heard about LTV?

A loan-to-value ratio is the percentage of the loan amount in relation to the total cost of car. The higher the LTV, the lower will be the down payment. It means that if the lender approves you for a higher LTV, the need for making a large down payment becomes redundant. So, 카지노사이트 how can you get the lender approve you for a large loan amount?

C = Credit Score must look Good

It is the most common suggestion for obtaining any type of credit. It seems easy for the one who tells it, but difficult for the one who has to follow it. But, do not worry because you have help from the July 1, 007카지노주소 2017 credit rule. If you have incomplete tax liens and inaccurate civil debts listed on your credit report, the credit bureaus will remove it. It can lead to a rise in your credit score. Even you can contribute to the rise by paying off a few debts.

C= Cost of Car should be Low

A low down payment becomes easy when the cost of car is low. If you do not have sufficient cash to make a down payment of at least ten percent of the cost, you can choose an inexpensive car. It will convert the inadequate down payment into one that’s just right for the lender. Settle for a used car. Avoid buying expensive add-ons from the dealer to keep the cost in check. Also, you can use your old car for trade-in and eliminate the need for down payment.

C = Cosigner can be your Savior

When in doubt, seek help! You can use a cosigner to convince the lender of regular payments. Once he sees you as a less risky investment, he may approve you for a larger loan amount. Remember to choose a cosigner with a good credit score so that the lender can rest his doubts about receiving back his money. Choose someone who will be capable of making monthly payments, if you fail to do so. If getting a cosigner is becoming a bit of a problem, you can ask any of your parents or your partner to become a co-applicant on the loan. Their credit score will strengthen your loan application and enable the lender to see you as a worthy borrower.

Buying a car with low down payment is not possible for everyone. But, if you work hard to increase LTV, you will have no trouble in buying a car. So, before you head down to the dealership lot, work out the details and make sure that you get approval for a higher loan amount.

A low down payment auto loan can solve your troubles and enable you to obtain higher LTV. Apply with EZAutoFinance.net and get an opportunity of buying a car without down payment. Work with the bad credit auto financing company today and ensure a stress-free car buying.

id=”article-body” class=”row” section=”article-body”> Robert Rodriguez/CNET Chinese health authorities continue to battle an outbreak of a pneumonia-like illness, first detected in the central city of Wuhan in December. The disease is caused by a novel coronavirus, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, which has now infected over 60,000 people and claimed more than 1,350 lives. On Thursday, the CDC confirmed a 15th case in the US under quarantine at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

The illness was first reported to the World Health Organization on New Year’s Eve and in the intervening weeks was linked to a family of viruses known as coronaviruses, the same family responsible for the diseases SARS and MERS, as well as some cases of the common cold. On Feb. 11, the WHO and other organizations agreed on the name COVID-19 for the illness.

On Feb. 12, Chinese health authorities reported a jump in the amount of cases and deaths in Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak. Over 13,300 new cases were recorded in Hubei alone, an increase of 700% over the previous day. Chinese authorities had adopted a new clinical method for confirming cases Wednesday, which sees them add “clinically diagnosed cases” to the count, which could help patients receive treatment sooner, according to CNN.

A special WHO committee declared a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, citing “the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems.” Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed outside China, including in the US, and authorities around the world have limited travel and enforced quarantines to guard against the spread.

Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest phone trade show, took the unprecedented step of cancelling the entire show which routinely attracts 100,000 visitors from across the world. A number of companies, including LG, 파워볼 Amazon, Sony and Nvidia, had previously stated they wouldn’t be attending this year’s show, citing coronavirus concerns.

The Changing English Language: Evolution or Dumbing Down?

WP Symposium Pro - Extensions Plugin
This demonstration has expired, please purchase a licence or uninstall the WP Symposium Pro Extensions plugin - get a valid licence code here.

id=”mod_16516091″>The times and the English language are changing

It happens every so often. Merriam-Webster or the Oxford English Dictionary announce the addition of new words to the English canon. My husband groans and I giggle. He thinks it’s a sign of a society in decline — the dumbing down of the human race. I think it’s reflective of today’s culture as language adapts to the current times — a form of linguistic evolution. (And yet, our marriage seems to work).

No matter your opinion on the subject, the English language is changing. And it’s happening fast!

With the internet age shattering geographic barriers, a wide array of slang, 007카지노 jargon and colloquialisms seem to find quickly infiltrate everyday conversations, texts, emails and social networks all over the world.

Some 21st Century additions to the dictionary

Use new words in a conversation with your parents or grandparents and you’ll probably be met with a blank stare. Use them in an IM with your teenage niece and you may actually gain some “Cool Aunt or Uncle” points. Here are a few examples:

Derpy: Someone who is awkward or accident-prone. Also a character on “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.”

Totes: An abbreviated version of totally. According to Urban Dictionary, “The average time saved by using the word totes … 26.6 seconds a day! Over the course of a year that adds up to 2.7 hours!!”

Selfie: A picture you take of yourself with the intention of sharing with your social networks. Selfie was named Oxford’s word of the year.

Woot: A shout of joy or victory.

Retweet: To share someone else’s message on twitter.

Jeggings: Leggings designed to resemble jeans.

Sexting: Sending sexually explicit photos, images, text messages, or emails via cell phone or mobile device.

Cyberbullying: Using the internet to harm other people, in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner.

Bromance: A close friendship between men that is non-sexual.

How do you feel about new words like jeggings, 슬롯머신사이트 retweet and sexting?

Woot!

Society on the decline.

See results Yes, it’s actually English (even if it’s old)

The English language is in a constant state of flux. Just look at 13th Century Old English and 14th Century Middle English. It’s like trying to read Japanese (unless, of course, you speak Japanese, in which case it’s nothing like that).

Have you ever tried to read Geoffrey Chaucher’s “The Canterbury Tales”? It’s doable, but it’s tough!

Here’s an excerpt:

Whan that aprill with his shoures soote

The droghte of march hath perced to the roote,

And bathed every veyne in swich licour

Of which vertu engendred is the flour.

Ummmm, what?

It’s difficult to decipher. And yes, it’s English. I even took an entire college literature course devoted to reading Chaucer’s work.

Time to text. | Source It’s all about the conTEXT

How would Chaucer feel now trying to interpret the changing lexicon. With the prevalence of smart phones, just about everyone in texting these days (even your mom). The younger generation in particular has taken advantage of this new form of communication. Take a quick look at Urban Dictionary or even a text dialogue between two teens:

A: HRU

B: AAK

A: D46?

B: TTLY

Any idea what these text abbreviation mean? Neither did I. Let me enlighten you:

Key to English

Newscientist.com writes that a time capsule buried in 1938 in New York City included a printed “key to English” that describes 20th-century American English in order to help discoverers 5000 years in the future understand the language.

Here we are just under 75 years later, and language has already changed dramatically. It’s safe to say that in 6938, the English language as we know it will most definitely be a foreign language

According to an article in the New York Times, the American Dialect Society’s Brice Russ claims that the 200 million+ messages posted daily on twitter may provide valuable information to linguists about geographic speech differences.

Many teachers are reporting that the texting language common on Facebook, twitter, IM and other social media sites is polluting students’ essays and homework assignments.

The implications of the changing language have been debated widely by scientists, linguists and even Hubbers:

Some of the reasons why the English language is important.

As a writer I enjoy the growing lexicon. It’s an opportunity to embrace new words and expand my writing horizon.

I know some people worry that these changes are making society stupid, but I would argue there has always been a portion of society that’s simply that: Stupid. Or, as our teen friends might text, “AYSOS*?” I guess it depends who you ask.

*Are you stupid or something?

The deterioration of language is usually defined, (primarily by linguists) as the evolutionary process of language. Naturally, this doesn’t answer the question, is language actually deteriorating. For some people it is; therefore, it’s relative. There is no question that the English language has lowered its standards; we don’t have the vocabulary of generations ago. These new words that Aleza refers to are quite elementary, without any etymological sustenance. They’re trendy and perhaps short-lived. The drastic drop in vocabulary level by students and young adults is attributed to television, social media, texting etc.. I think students and young adults should learn the challenging English words that have etymological roots with Latin and Greek, words that have been around for centuries, rather than these rather vogue, puerile expressions that will disappear as soon as they’re replaced with other more juvenile expressions.

Hehehe, @SpeakUpStandOut I like the image of you walking down the street in a period costume talking in Old English!! Too funny!!!

I love Old English. I wish we still spoke that way; listening to someone speak that way is so beautiful. If I weren’t so language challenged, I’d learn how to speak like that and then I’d go around Los Angeles acting like I’m straight out of the 18th century! 🙂

I think that a lot of the “new” words that are being used are useless, they have no value in the English language and certainly shouldn’t be introducted into the dictionary (in order to taint future generations). These words are a fad, when they fade; they will always be following us in the dictionary!

@Tymolen Thank you! I love your comment. I love the idea of a mideival rap. I also love your outlook on language. I’m so glad you stopped by!!

Great Hub! I love Chaucher’s excerpt you put, it’s like mid-evil rap about the spring. ha Your point is undeniable and I hope that one day mankind could merge almost all language together. Kinda like some parts in Europe and Korea. Where they speak 3-4 languages on average and interchange in some sentences because each language is indeed limited on certain cultural aspects.

You are on the right side here. Have your husband read “The Unfolding of Language” by Guy Deutscher. It’s a fun read (I know, it sounds dry but it definitely is not) and he’ll learn why he shouldn’t groan.

TTLY should not be confused with TTYL (talk to you later), which even I, in advanced age, have seen and understood.

@novascotiamiss I just love the idea of language and evolution. It makes it feel so fluid and full of life!

Interesting hub. Yes, I sometimes also think that our society is in decline but you have a point. New words also mean new opportunities. Another interesting aspect is how languages are evolving in different parts of the world. E.g. Afrikaans is a South African language that stems from the dutch of the 1600’s when the first dutch settlers inhabited the country. While the dutch in Holland has evolved, Afrikaans has remained somewhat of a baby dutch.
