The pair, both of Pipers Close, Haverhill, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court for sentencing today after Hall was convicted of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered at a trial in December. At today hearing he also pleaded to drink driving on the night of the fire and was given a six month concurrent term for this, plus a four year driving ban.Hall was jailed for four years.During the trial, the court heard Richardson was sacked from Chilford Hall in 2009 for stealing and drinking on the job.In the lead up to the blaze which resulted in the destruction of historic barns and the pavilion while owner Fiona Alper and her son Ben slept in the main house nearby the emergency services received a call from Richardson then partner Sally Ketteridge. She claimed the two friends had threatened to burn down Chilford Hall and were heading over in a black Honda.Officers spotted them driving out of the grounds and the pair were later arrested in Haverhill. When police seized the Honda they found bin bags containing several bottles of empty spirits and tissues soaked in alcohol. Richardson had said he had only wanted to the place up and steal alcohol and did not know Fiona Alper was nearby. But Hall said he had been bullied and threatened into accompanying Richardson and his attempts to put out the fire failed.Sentencing, Judge Hawkesworth said Chilford Hall had been the life’s work of Mrs Alper’s late husband, who died in 2002.He told the pair: “Mr Alper had devoted the latter part of his life to building up the business, largely for the benefit of the community as a whole.”He drove it forward with a passion and I can barely gasp the enormity of the emotional trauma that you have caused to Mrs Alper and her son watching her late husband’s work go up in flames.”Det Con Tracey Griffin, who led the police investigation, said after the sentencing: “This was a revenge attack by an ex employee and his accomplice which caused a considerable amount of damage, not to mention the heartache this caused couples who were due to get married at the wedding venue.”When officers arrived the fire was well lit and the Alper family were still asleep in their beds. The officers woke the family and moved them to a place of safety until firefighters arrived to fight the blaze.”The fire not only put officers and fire officers in danger but has also had a detrimental effect on the local community and local businesses.”Thankfully no one was hurt and I hope today’s result sends out a strong message to others of the serious consequences of arson.”Mrs Alper: “Nothing can change what has happened and the huge loss we have suffered.”We have been deeply touched by the overwhelming support from the public.and residents are or soon will be putting out steak bones.Quiet, cul de sac.
